Update: One dead in Highway 11/17 collision

One person has died after a collision involving a pickup truck and a transport truck on Highway 11/17 in Thunder Bay.

THUNDER BAY – One person is dead following an early-morning collision on Highway 11/17 near the intersection with Balsam Street in Thunder Bay.

The collision involving a pickup truck, which was badly damaged, and a transport truck occurred just before 6:30 a.m.

The transport also collided with a traffic signal at the north side of the intersection, leaving the pole entirely ripped out of the ground and tangled up with the vehicle.

The highway remains closed between Red River Road and Balsam Street.

The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed the fatality in a release Thursday morning, saying the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

An OPP spokesperson could not yet provide any information on the status of other individuals involved in the collision.
