THUNDER BAY – The Clothing Assistance Mission is still in need of support to replace the roof on their May Street storefront.
Ewa Gulbinowicz, the organization’s executive director, on Wednesday said they’ve raised about $9,000 in October in response to a challenge put forth by an anonymous donor, who gave $25,000 to the cause and asked the public to match it during the month of October.
The overall goal is $138,000, the total cost of the roof repair.
“We are closer, but not so close. At this moment we are standing at a potential 50 per cent of the cost of the roof,” Gulbinowicz said.
“So we will try to motivate the public to help us further with any donations they can make.”
The charity helps about 200 families a month with free clothing and has been in operation for the past 13 years.
It is the largest clothing bank in Thunder Bay.
Gulbinowicz said they will make due with roof repair patches in the meantime, but the roof is in desperate need of replacement over the long haul.
“Hopefully we’re going to survive,” she said. "I know it’s very late in the year at this moment. Replacing this roof is going to take three or four weeks. So if the snow falls, the service cannot continue. We have to survive somehow.
“We’re going to patch inexpensively all the holes and try to survive.”
