DULUTH, Minn. — Canadian National Railway has paid $1.25 million to settle a claim from the US government after a 2016 forest fire in northeastern Minnesota.

The US Attorney's Office says federal officials alleged the fire originated with a mechanical failure in a locomotive operated by CN subsidiary Wisconsin Central Ltd.

It burned nearly 1,000 acres, including 400 acres within Superior National Forest.

The US government said the fire cost more than $1.5 million to suppress.

According to the US attorney's office, the case was resolved before the government filed suit, so legal determination of liability has not been determined.
