THUNDER BAY – The Canadian Coast Guard’s search and rescue lifeboat station in Thunder Bay has been closed for the winter.

The boats are designed for use on open water, and cannot be operated on frozen-over lakes. Any search and rescue operations needed will be carried out by both the Canadian and U.S. coast guards using icebreakers, which may call on other vessels in the area to assist.

Aircraft from the U.S. are also involved as necessary.

Thunder Bay’s station closed on Monday, the earliest of nine winter shut-downs.

Marine emergencies can be reported 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, toll-free within Canada at 1-800-267-7270 or via marine VHF radio - channel 16.
