THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Coast Guard is preparing to reopen its Thunder Bay search and rescue station.

The local lifeboat base will open for the season on Friday, Apr. 16.

The Thunder Bay station is served by the 14-metre motor lifeboat Cape Chaillon.

The base is staffed by a crew of eight, split into two teams of four members each who work a two weeks on/two weeks off rotation.

The Thunder Bay station closed for the winter on Nov. 30, 2020.

It is the last of the coast guard's seasonally-operated facilities on the Great Lakes to start up again.

Cobourg reopened on April 2, followed on April 9 by Goderich, Meaford and Tobermory.
