College could get fire fighter training

Locals hoping to become fire fighters might be able to stay in Thunder Bay for school this September.

Locals hoping to become fire fighters might be able to stay in Thunder Bay for school this September.

City council authorized a memorandum of understanding Monday night between the city, Confederation college, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs and the Ontario Fire Marshall to bring a fire fighter training program to the city.
The pre-service fire fighter education and training program would be run out of Confederation College. While completing the one-year course doesn’t make you a fire fighter, fire chief said it helps.

"It’s a good thing to have on your resume it shows some interest. It shows that you are serious about the profession," Hay said.

Hay told council that a newspaper ad running for one day would generate enough applicants to fill the program. He said there are only a few more steps to go before the course is offered next fall. Hay said he’s hopeful Confederation College will get the necessary accreditation.
