Full-time staff at Ontario colleges will participate in a strike vote that could impact local students.

Confederation College President Pat Lang said there are about 150 full-time staff at the local institution eligible to vote.

She won't speculate on whether she thinks a strike is a real possibility but if they did hit the picket lines, Lang said the college would be forced to close.

Lang added that if a strike happens, some part-time faculty would also be off the job, if their services weren't required. Lang also said students would still be able to finish their studies.

The vote is taking place on Wednesday. Some college students in southern Ontario are staging a walkout the day before to protest the possible labour disruption.

Local Student Union President Ryan West said no such rally is planned in Thunder Bay, and he's remaining optimistic that the faculty will vote against taking strike action.

Three academic strikes have taken place in the college system, one in 1984, another 1989 and most recently in 2006.
