UPDATE: Fatal collision closes Expressway (5 photos)

Serious collisions on the Thunder Bay Expressway have slowed traffic throughout the city.

THUNDER BAY -- An early morning collision turned deadly as commuters made their way to work on Wednesday morning along the Thunder Bay Expressway.

OPP in a release said a vehicle travelling southbound struck a northbound vehicle, leaving one driver dead and the other with minor injuries.

Both vehicles involved had a single occupant and police said they are withholding the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

City police and OPP closed a section of the highway between Oliver Road and the Harbour Expressway while they investigated the collision. The highway has since reopened.

Several other cars along other stretches of the Thunder Bay Expressway also left the icy highway, the OPP saying they responded to an extraordinary number of crashes between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Motorists were advised to seek another route while the road is closed and to exercise caution behind the wheel.

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services were also kept busy on Wednesday morning with a pair of collisions west of the MacGregor Landfill. The department tweeted about a pair of vehicles leaving the highway in the westbound lanes, winding up in the ditch. They later tweeted the collision scenes had been cleared and asked motorists to use caution.

This is a developing story. More information will be added when it becomes available.
