Communities hit by Rainy River flooding look towards preventative measures

FORT FRANCES, Ont. -- Communities hit by flooding from high water levels in the Rainy River earlier this summer are looking at ways of protecting themselves in the future.

FORT FRANCES, Ont. -- Communities hit by flooding from high water levels in the Rainy River earlier this summer are looking at ways of protecting themselves in the future.

Water levels along the river have retreated to slightly higher than normal, allowing communities such as Fort Frances, Rainy River and Couchiching First Nation to focus solely on recovery efforts.

Rainy River mayor Deborah Ewald said the town’s dock suffered damage from the flooding.

The town wants to see measures taken, such as raising the road, to reduce the threat of severe floods striking again.

Couchiching First Nation Chief Sarah Mainville said 14 homes were damaged and as many as eight of those might have to be moved if there are no long-term solutions.

Officials with the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing surveyed the aftermath last week and in the process of calculating disaster relief estimates.
