A few tears were shed Tuesday as a part of Westfort's history came crashing down.
Demolition began Tuesday morning on the Westfort Community Centre. City council voted in August to take down the building, after a five-year structural review concluded the facility had reached the end of its life cycle. The city wanted the community centre vacated and demolished prior to any snowfall.
The facility was built in 1944, and had many upgrades over the years. But even the Westfort Community Centre Board recognized that the condition of the building was getting worse and worse.
All of the programs and user groups of the Westfort Community Centre have been transferred to other centres. The estimate cost of the demolition is $35,000.
