THUNDER BAY -- Mary Anne Comuzzi says after seven years, it’s someone else’s turn to take the reins at the George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation.

Comuzzi on Wednesday announced she’ll be stepping down as executive director at year’s end, adding the search for her replacement is under way.

“It’s time,” she said.

“You know they all say you’ll know when it’s time. The foundation is in a really good position in the community. Financially we’re in a good position. I think it’s time to allow somebody else to get on board and take it in a new direction.

“Change is always good and I’m ready to pass the baton and I’m ready to start a new chapter in my life and do a few different things.”
Comuzzi said she’ll treasure the relationships and friendships she’s formed with the George Jeffrey Children’s Centre’s many clients and their families, as well as the staff.

Her fondest memories were the two times former Chicago Blackhawks start Patrick Sharp brought the Stanley Cup to the centre, in 2010 and 2013.

It allowed the children to be a part of a celebration that they ordinarily might have to watch from afar.

“They would never have gotten that opportunity. Having Patrick involved, that has been one of the highlights,” she said.

Comuzzi is proud of the work she’s accomplished over the years, saying the organization is a vital one in the community, and has fought hard to put the foundation in a place of success.

“I’ve been told that it’s easier just to say yes to (me) because (I) don’t take no for an answer,” Comuzzi said. “And I don’t think I would change that.”

She walks away fulfilled and honoured.

“I see on a regular basis the children who come in here and their families and I see the work that is being done. So the dollar we raise goes to help these children. That is one of the most rewarding parts of this job,” Comuzzi said.
