Condo build gives housing start statistics a boost

A jump in multi-family housing units has led to a big increase in overall housing starts in the city last month.

The bulk of the 48-per cent increase is due to a 24-unit condo building started at the corner of Grenville Avenue and Adelaide Street. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation marketing analyst Warren Philp said it is the first condo start since 2007.

So far for the year, Thunder Bay has seen almost a 30 per cent increase in total starts.

On the down side, the month of June brought only 28 single-family housing starts, compared to 33 starts in June.

Philp said while construction is still going strong, he believes the overall number of starts this year will be down from 2010.
