THUNDER BAY – Students at Confederation College have a new dining option when they visit the college's main cafeteria.

Verde, the college's first 100% plant-based meal provider, will be providing students, faculty, and visitors with an ever-evolving, completely plant-based menu.

Director of facilities, Robin Gold, says that the new menus are a major milestone in the college's sustainability efforts and line up well with their objectives.

“It aligns really well with the college’s stance on sustainability,” she said. “In April 2021, we signed the United Nations SDG Accord, which is 17 goals, and providing plant-based food alternatives for folks is something that aligns really well with that.”

The packaging Verde uses is all compostable, which also helps with another one of the college's initiatives to reduce waste on campus.

Anne Jewett, general manager of food services for Sodexo Canada, says the new food option helps with both organizations’ goals of improving sustainability.

“It works well with our sustainability,” she said. “So, Sodexo Canada has made a commitment to reduce our protein purchases by 20% by 2024, so a concept like this helps us.”
