THUNDER BAY – Confederation College welcomed the public in to see the ins and outs of the college’s School of Health on Saturday.
The event took place in Confederation College’s Shuniah Building and saw faculty and program coordinators from the new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), Practical Nursing, Primary Care Paramedic, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Medical Laboratory Assistant, and Medical Radiation Technologist programs talking with attendees about the programs and answering questions.
“We hope this open house gives prospective students, parents, and those considering a career change, a chance to see what programs we have available, and also see the labs and learning spaces,” said Alexandra Jones, manager of Marketing, Recruitment & Communications.
“It will also give people an opportunity to learn more about our BScN program, which will have its first intake in the Fall.”
Guided tours ran every half hour and provided prospective students with the opportunity to see the labs and simulation equipment used by over 20 full and part-time programs in a variety of health and community service areas.
“[The] students saw a dozen or so spaces that have a number of different activities from our high-fidelity mannequins in the nursing labs to the back of an ambulance, into our X-ray rooms,” said Shane Strickland, Dean, School of Health, Negahneewin, & Community Services
“They're getting to see the types of learning spaces that our students benefit from here at Confed.”
Some of the resources that students were able to learn about include simulations suites, digital imaging equipment, a paramedic lab with an ambulance simulator, a mock apartment for the creation of scenarios, a 24-seat dental clinic and a 34-seat science lab.
“It's a really fun and interactive way for students to see some of our faculty, see some of our spaces and get to have a relationship with Confederation College,” said Strickland.
