Educating kids in remote First Nation communities was the topic of discussion at a gathering held Tuesday by the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
The conference explored the challenges, opportunities and successes in their education system.
NAN Deputy Chief Terry Waboose said there are many positive things happening in their communities right now, like a new school being built in North Spirit Lake First Nation. But he added that they're also faced with many challenges.
One major issue is getting adequate funding for education. He said the community can't afford to offer some programs, and some people aren't able to access education services.
Waboose added that a lot of students are qualified to go to post-secondary institutions, but can't because of a lack of funding.
The issues are being brought up during NAN's third annual Education Awareness Week.
