THUNDER BAY - Above normal temperatures and precipitation in the forecast this weekend could result in possible water accumulation in low-lying areas.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority issued a flood outlook statement for the city of Thunder Bay, municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, and the townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies, and Dorion.

Temperatures will rise to 6C on Saturday and rain is expected to start that evening, with approximately 25 to 35 millimetres expected throughout the weekend.

“Residents should exercise special caution around rivers and streams,” the LRCA said in a statement. “The forecasted warm temperatures and heavy precipitation will increase melting and degrade snowpack and river ice, resulting in runoff to area watercourses.”

According to the LRCA, flooding from rivers and lakes is not expected at this time, but water is expected to accumulate on roads, parking lots, and in low-lying areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions and be advised that banks along rivers and streams can become very slippery with precipitation and melting conditions.

Extra caution should be taken around frozen waterways, as ice conditions are expected to rapidly deteriorate.

The LRCA will continue to monitor the situation and update its outlook based on conditions.
