Conservation authority issues water safety statement

Lakehead Region Conservation Authority says while current water levels remain within normal seasonal ranges, there is still above average to substantial snowpack remaining as the spring melt continues

THUNDER BAY — Though area water levels currently remain within normal seasonal ranges, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority cautions that more melting snow will bring a rise in flowing water and the possibility of some ponding.

The conservation authority issued a water safety statement on Tuesday for areas including Thunder Bay, along with the outlying municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, O'Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.

The statement said there remains an above average snowpack, with substantial amounts still in rural areas. As temperatures warm, the spring melt is anticipated to lead to a rise in flowing water in waterways, and ponding in low lying areas and places with frozen culverts and blocked ditches.

The conservation authority is also advising people be cautious around area waterways, and that high flows and unstable slippery banks could lead to dangerous conditions.
