Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers caught over two dozen anglers breaking the law during an enforcement blitz on Lake Nipigon.

Results of the May 27 and 28 blitz were released by the ministry on Monday.

The MNRF says conservation officers from Nipigon accompanied by a Greenstone OPP constable checked 70 resident and non-resident anglers for compliance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and Ontario Fishery Regulations, with special attention given to regulations that apply only to Lake Nipigon.

The officers laid 19 charges and issued eight warnings.

Infractions included:

  • fishing without a licence
  • possessing live brook trout
  • catching and retaining fish of a prohibited size
  • not using a barbless hook
  • using a line with more than one barbless hook

Officers also laid charges and warnings under the Small Vessel Regulations to boat operators having insufficient personal flotation devices or lifejackets aboard.
