THUNDER BAY — Work has started on the new playground at Thunder Bay's popular Centennial Park.
Site preparation by the successful bidder – RJC Concrete and Construction – is underway, meaning that access to the farm area of the park, and adjacent trails, is restricted.
This phase is expected to be complete by the end of November, with installation of the playground structures scheduled to take place next spring.
The city's Parks and Open Spaces section budgeted $700,000 for the project.
The new playground will be larger and contain more components than the one it's replacing.
In consideration of the park's history and setting, as well as feedback from the public, the structures will be built largely of wood.
"Keeping the public's interests top of mind, we will be utilizing a woodland adventure theme, as it suits Centennial Park's forested setting and respects the nostalgia for the previously-removed structures," said supervisor Werner Schwar.
Visitors to Centennial Park are asked to avoid the construction area and obey posted signage.
