THUNDER BAY -- Drivers around Thunder Bay will need to stay alert this week, as road crews make the most of the end of construction season.

A portion of John Street between Valley and Mercier Streets has been shut down, as crews work on that road's watermains.

Portions of John between those two streets will be closed for the next five days as the work continues.

Local traffic will be allowed through, but detours will be posted for the duration of the project.

Meanwhile, East-West traffic on Central Avenue at Balmoral Street will also be shut down this week, as that area is undergoing storm sewer reconstruction.

The work is part of a multi-year, phased rebuild of Balmoral.

While the intersection is closed, through traffic is directed to use Amber Drive instead.

Work there is also expected to last until Friday.
