An Open House will be held Thursday.

THUNDER BAY — The firm hired by the City of Thunder Bay to determine whether the existing police headquarters should be renovated, added to, or replaced will meet with the public this week.

Thunder Bay-based FormStudio Architects is hosting an open house on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the City Hall lobby.

Company representatives will make opening remarks and present some visual displays.

Citizens will get a chance to ask questions and provide input.

An online survey will also be launched on Thursday, and will be available until Jan. 2, 2020.

The Balmoral Street police station was built in the mid 1980s, followed by extensive renovations in 1992.

More than 320 officers and civilian staff currently work in the building, nearly one-third more than when it was opened.

Chief Sylvie Hauth has said "there are lots of issues in terms of functionality, and it's really trying to keep up with the demands in terms of things that need upkeep."

The city has deferred some larger capital expenditures, relating to the roof replacement and HVAC upgrades, pending the outcome of the study.

When it posted a Request for Proposals from interested architectural firms last winter, the city said it was expecting a draft report by last month, and a final report next month.

However, the schedule has now been adjusted, so the study won't be finished until the spring.
