WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police have charged a former resident of Fort Frances after seizing more than $2.2 million worth of illegal drugs.

James Daniel Perlett, 43, of Winnipeg is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy.

He's also charged with possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000 and possession of body armour without a permit.

A 40-year-old co-accused faces identical charges.

Police announced the arrests Wednesday as the culmination of a months-long investigation by the Guns and Gangs Unit.

The two men were arrested during a vehicle stop on April 16, following the execution of search warrants at two Winnipeg residences associated with them.

Perlett was arrested in Red Deer, Alta. in 1996 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his parents in their Fort Frances home earlier that year.

They were killed while they slept.

Perlett was 19 years old at the time.

After a mistrial was declared in his first trial in Thunder Bay in 1998, a second jury took six days to convict him of second-degree murder.

Perlett was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without eligibility for parole for 18 years.

He served his sentence in Manitoba's Stony Mountain Penitentiary.
