THUNDER BAY – Local correctional officers will be holding an information rally outside the Thunder Bay District Jail on Thursday morning.
OPSEU Local 737 president Mike Lundy said the demonstration will be held to both show support for officers working in the MacDougall Street facility after a riot and hostage situation Monday night, as well as to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with a tentative agreement put forward by the provincial government.
“We just want to bring light to some of our health and safety concerns and answer some questions we can,” he said. “We can’t get into specifics of the security stuff that happened but some people do have questions about what happens.”
Correctional officers from across the province voted this week on the tentative agreement, which was struck in November.
The results from the ratification vote are expected to be announced either late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
