THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay Art Gallery will have more information on its potential move to the waterfront in the next few weeks.

On Monday city council agreed to negotiate with the gallery to lease land on the waterfront South of Pearl Street for a new building.

Gallery director Sharon Godwin said it's great news but the project is still a couple of years away.

Applications are in right now to FedNor, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and other agencies for the design phase of the estimated $25 million project.

The gallery has out-grown its 40 year old building at Confederation College. It needs more space to house its permanent collections, attract traveling exhibits and host workshops.

Moving to the waterfront will also increase foot traffic to the gallery and get more people in the door.

"It's a community art gallery. It's purpose is to serve the people of Thunder Bay and the people of the region," she said.
