City council approved an outline for a new waste management strategy for the city.
Councillors gave their approval during Monday night’s city council meeting at city hall.
The goal of the waste management strategy is to reduce the amount of waste that is being dumped in the landfill. Recycling co-ordinator Jason Sherband said it's a challenge to get small businesses to recycle.
“The challenge with some of the smaller businesses is space,” he told CKPR Radio. “If you have a large bin outside, where do you put it? So that’s a big issue and with this strategy we can look at ways at engaging that sector.”
Sherband added that the city currently diverts about 31 per cent of its waste from the landfill through programs like recycling.
That’s still below Ontario’s average, which is at about 40 per cent.
