Council holds off on bylaw decision

Thunder Bay city council wants more time to look at the proposed changes to zoning standards across the entire city.

Thunder Bay city council wants more time to look at the proposed changes to zoning standards across the entire city.

Wednesday night, city administration presented the new draft bylaw, which represents a complete re-write of regulations within the city boundaries.

City staff say the changes will make zoning more user-friendly, environmentally sensitive, and up-to-date. However some businesses disagree, saying new regulations for drive-thru restaurants and other businesses could have negative impacts.

Murray Chown represents a number of chain restaurants in the city, and he wants staff to work on a realistic distance that a drive-thru can be placed from residential areas. Chown agrees that zero or three metres is not suitable, but he says the city's suggestion of 20 metres is unreasonable.

The draft bylaw was deferred by city council members, who say they want more information. The issue is expected to come back in August, with the actual bylaw up for adoption in September.
