THUNDER BAY -- city council meets tonight and will look at a motion to support the province's proposed expansion of the spring bear hunt.

While some councillors expressed support, the idea is meeting some local resistance.

Minister of Natural Resources Bill Mauro introduced a proposal for an expanded spring bear hunt earlier this month.  The idea was met with wide support from local outdoorsmen.

The plan isn’t with its opposition. Environmental Commissioner of Ontario Ellen Schwartzel offered harsh criticism of the plan, accusing proponents of ignoring evidence that did not support the hunt’s expansion.

Coun. Joe Virdiramo has introduced a motion that would see the city formally support the hunt.

Several individuals have requested to speak to council about their opposition to the idea.

The city will also receive an update on the city's tourism numbers.

Despite a general downturn in the economy, the tourism division is reporting a slight upturn.
