Thunder Bay's budget is overrun this year and possible savings will be up for discussion at city hall tonight.
Mid way through the year, administration is projecting a budget shortfall of $2.5 million. Superior North EMS, legal services, and the golf division are all running a deficit at this point.
The largest negative variance is being attributed to a winter that just seemed to drag on and on and on. Snow removal and road maintenance ran up an additional $1.4 million in costs.
The city plans to dip into a reserve fund to offset the shortfall. On a more positive note, the city manager will update council on more than a million dollars in savings found throughout the corporation so far this year.
Some big changes to bingo in the city are also on the agenda. Ontario Lottery and Gaming has worked out a deal with Thunder Bay Community Bingo to create a new, electronic gaming centre.
A steady decline in traditional players are threatening the operation. It's believed incorporating electronic games could renew interest and attract new players.
