THUNDER BAY – City council will take its first look at a plan that could clear this year’s $3.2 million budget shortfall.

With the city facing the multi-million dollar deficit, city manager Norm Gale has drafted a budget savings plan that would slash that number by more than $3 million.

Gale says that plan would extend a city hiring freeze, and defer some capital projects until later budgets.

Projects identified for deferral include local improvements on Woodcrest Road, and a covered skating rink project.

Thunder Bay would also slash its contribution to the city IT reserve fund by more $400,000.

The budget savings plan doesn’t just include cuts.

On capital spending, several departments have come in under budget by a total of $977,000.

Council meets for its regular scheduled meeting at Thunder Bay City Hall Monday evening at 6:30 p.m.
