City council could be implementing a new bylaw that limits the number of pets a resident can own.

The city currently has no limit on the number of dogs or cats a single individual can own. Other communities have similar bylaws already in place limited the number of pets to as many as four or six.

Council is expected to discuss the issue at Monday night’s meeting.

At-large Coun. Aldo Ruberto says he thinks it's time for the city to have its own bylaw and added research is already underway.

Other items expected on the agenda include a bylaw to prohibit smoking at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Officials with the regional are trying to reduce the number of people who smoke on hospital property but so far, their campaign hasn’t work. Officials will be asking council to amend its municipal smoke-free bylaw to include the hospital grounds.
