THUNDER BAY – City council meets tonight following a one-week hiatus.
Councillors will look at a potential tax break for owners of heritage buildings, and the possibility of bringing the Canada Summer Games back to Thunder Bay.
Coun. Larry Hebert is asking city staffers to prepare a report on the process of bidding on the 2021 Canada Summer Games.
That year would mark 40 years since Thunder Bay last hosted the event.
The province of Ontario has won the right to host the games, and it's now up to cities to bid for the event.
City staff would need to provide a report on what the bidding process entails, and if the city's sporting venues and infrastructure could still support a multi-sport event of that scale.
Also on the agenda is the proposal from the Heritage Advisory Committee.
It wants to provide tax relief to owners of buildings that have been identified as having historical value.
City staff are recommending council ask for a report on the full details of such a program.
