Council to consider removing traffic signals at two intersections

Report recommends switching lights for four-way stop signs at Frederica and Brown streets and Donald and Vickers streets.

THUNDER BAY – City officials are recommending the removal of traffic lights at a pair of south-end intersections.

In a report to be presented to councillors on Monday night, the city’s infrastructure and operations department says the amount of traffic passing through the intersections at Frederica and Brown streets and Donald and Vickers streets no longer warrants lights under the Ontario traffic manual standards.

The report shows the signals haven’t been required at either crossroads since at least 2006, noting that unwarranted traffic signals result in unnecessary expense, pollution and inconvenience to motorists.

Should council vote to approve the recommendation, the traffic lights would be replaced with four-way stop signs.

The cost to remove the traffic signals is about $10,000 to $12,000 per intersection, which can likely be covered under the existing 2021 budget.

Public input will be sought to help council make their final decision.
