Council to make declaration at Chippewa Park

City council will gather at the Chippewa Park Pavillion tonight to endorse and adopt a declaration of commitment to the Urban Aboriginal Community.
City council will gather at the Chippewa Park Pavillion tonight to endorse and adopt a declaration of commitment to the Urban Aboriginal Community.

The desire to have a declaration adopted by city council was voiced many times by members of the Aboriginal community during several gatherings in 2009. This will coincide with National Aboriginal Day.

The declaration of commitment will establish the basis for interactions between the city and its Aboriginal community. It is also meant to re-affirm to the Aboriginal community the City's commitment to building a strong relationship.

Also on the agenda for Monday night, council will discuss the draft plan for the future development of the islands and shoreline areas along the Kam River. The city conducted public consultations on possible uses for the McKellar and Mission Islands in the fall of 2009.

The plan recommends an expansion of the mixed-use waterfront land, which includes a new major open space designation along the north-west shoreline of the Kam River.
