Council to review transit master plan

Thunder Bay city council is set to receive another update Monday night on the transit master plan study.

Thunder Bay city council is set to receive another update Monday night on the transit master plan study.

For more than a year, the city has been reviewing existing transit services and developing short- and long-term plans to respond to the challenges over the next five-to-10 years.

The company hired to conduct the study has also been looking at potential terminals, including one in the intercity area and one at the existing Water Street terminal.

The transit report states that challenges have been identified with both potential locations. In the intercity area, it is uncertain whether enough land can be secured.

At the Water Street terminal, the future is uncertain as a result of possible plans for a new arena and events centre there.

Council will also meet Tuesday night, with a historic event between Thunder Bay city council and the Fort William First Nation band council.

It will be the first joint meeting of the two councils.

Chief Peter Collins said the declaration will mean the two communities will work in unison on the issues.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson said she is excited by the joint meeting and added that there's a lot the two councils have to speak about.

A declaration of commitment will be signed by the parties.

The two councils also hope to form a united front in convincing Cliffs Natural Resources to locate a ferrochrome processing plant in this area.
