Counterfeit dollars seized at International Falls

Fake U.S. bills hidden in commercial rail shipment

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. – Nearly a million dollars in counterfeit U.S. currency, hidden in a commercial rail shipment originating in China, was seized at the International Falls port of entry, just over 300 kilometres west of Thunder Bay. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Saturday the find was made during a December 14 inspection.

The agency didn’t say what led customs officers to flag the shipment. But when it was inspected, officers discovered 45 cartons containing counterfeit currency in the form of $1 bills, with a total value of $900,000 (USD).

The bills are being turned over by CBP to the U.S. Secret Service, which has confirmed they are counterfeit.
