A hunting trip to northwestern Ontario cost a U.S. citizen much more than he had counted on.

The Connecticut resident was fined a total of $4,000 in connection with an October, 2017 incident near Nestor Falls.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, conservation officers had placed a white-tailed deer decoy in an area where there had been complaints about unsafe hunting practices.

Court was told the defendant was travelling on the Tri-Lake Road when he saw the decoy, picked up his rifle and began firing.

The man took four shots down the road where he was unable to see any oncoming traffic, including two shots when he was still in his vehicle.

A justice of the peace fined him $3,000 for discharging a high-powered rifle without due care and attention to people or property, and $1,000 for discharging a gun from a vehicle.

In addition, his hunting privileges in Ontario were suspended for two years, and he must take the Ontario Hunter Education Course before getting another licence.
