A justice of the peace in Thunder Bay has ordered a Nolalu-area man to pay the cost of extinguishing brush fires that he set on his property.

The case dates back to May, 2017 when a concerned citizen contacted the Nolalu Fire Department regarding an unmonitored brush fire in her neighbour's field.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the man had lit several fires on his property that day, then returned to his residence, from where he was unable to monitor them.

Nolalu firefighters were able to suppress the fires which burned a total of approximately 2.6 hectares of land.

The resident pleaded guilty and was fined $500 for starting a fire and failing to leave a person in charge. He was also ordered to make restitution of almost $6,000 for the cost of putting the fires out.
