The province has awarded what will amount to be a $473-million contract to design, build, finance and maintain the Thunder Bay consolidated courthouse for the next 30 years.
In today’s dollars the deal signed with Plenary Justice is worth about $247.7 million.
The courthouse, being built in the city’s south-side downtown core, will replace the Superior Court of Justice, located on Camelot Street, and the Ontario Court of Justice on Arthur Street.
The project is expected to be completed by 2013, and will create an estimated 225 jobs at peak construction periods while the build is underway.
It’s being built using the alternative financing and procurement model, which will provide the company annual payments, similar to a mortgage, over the duration of the contract.
Plenary Justice will be responsible for the upkeep and repair of the building and its facilities, as well as the outdoor landscaping.
The company, part of the multinational Plenary Group, was one of three companies shortlisted for the project a year ago by the Ontario government.
