THUNDER BAY – For a second straight day, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has announced more than 20 new cases of COVID-19.

The health unit on Friday said there are 26 new cases, leaving 121 active cases in the catchment area.

There have now been 1,130 cases in the District of Thunder Bay since last March 27, when the first case was born.

Of those cases, 585 were recorded in 2020 and 545 have been recorded in the first six weeks of 2021.

Nineteen of the cases are considered close contact cases, the second-highest single-day total reported by the health unit since the pandemic began. Two of the cases are related to an outbreak at Chartwell Hilldale senior's home, and another is listed as related to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Two cases are considered pending and one exposure category is unknown.

There are three people currently in hospital suffering from COVID-19, with one person in the intensive care unit. All 26 are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding area.

There have been 101 combined cases over the past seven days, a rate of about 73.7 per 100,000.

The province is expected on Friday to announce which colour the District of Thunder Bay will emerge into next week when the lockdown is potentially lifted in the region.
