THUNDER BAY – COVID-19 metrics largely remained steady Tuesday as the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 93 new infections.

With 84 previous cases resolved, and another seven removed from the active count after “data quality checks,” the number of active cases across the health unit increased only by two, to 310.

The number of district residents in hospital with the virus remained at 10, the health unit reported, with none reported to be in the Intensive Care Unit.

Thunder Bay’s regional hospital, which serves residents from beyond the Thunder Bay District, had 27 COVID-positive patients as of Tuesday, with three in ICU.

Of the 93 new cases reported Tuesday, 87 were in the Thunder Bay area, four in district communities, and two in First Nations.

Seven were attributed to household contact, 32 to other close contact, and five to travel outside the region. An exposure category was unknown for seven cases, and pending for 42 others.

The health unit has advised case counts will “significantly underestimate” the true spread of COVID-19 after the government limited testing eligibility on Dec. 31, saying the move was necessary due to test shortages.
