THUNDER BAY — The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay district has climbed to 30, the highest total since June 17, 2021.

The district health unit reported 17 new cases on Monday, including 14 in the City of Thunder Bay or surrounding townships.

There were also three new cases in First Nation communities.

Thirteen of the new cases are the result of close contact with infected individuals.

Six previously diagnosed cases were resolved since Friday, when the TBDHU reported 19 active cases across the district.

The health unit has not yet provided an updated total for the number of COVID-19 cases at St. Martin Elementary School, where it declared an outbreak last week that resulted in the temporary closure of the school.

On Thursday, it said there were nine cases involving the school community, but officials cautioned that that number was likely to rise in the coming days.

A Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board spokesperson said Monday afternoon that there were 10 confirmed cases.

COVID-19 testing was made available on Saturday to all students and staff at a drive-through event.

St. Martin's students are currently studying at home until further notice.

According to TBDHU, as of Monday morning one resident of the Thunder Bay district was receiving treatment in hospital for COVID-19.
