The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 14 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday.

THUNDER BAY – COVID-19 has claimed three more lives in the Thunder Bay District, as the number of active cases continued to climb to levels not seen since December.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 14 new cases Saturday, as well as one new death attributed to the virus. Southbridge Care Homes also reported two residents at its Roseview long-term care home had died.

A long-running outbreak at the home, first declared in November, continued to cause fatalities even with only two cases active there as of Saturday.

Roseview residents now account for 23 of the 26 total COVID-19 deaths in the district.

The two new deaths at Roseview were reported too late to be included in the health unit's Saturday numbers, and will be reflected in its Sunday update.

Ten of the cases reported Saturday are in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, while four are in district communities.

Six were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case, five had no known exposure, while the exposure category for three others was listed as “pending.”

With four cases newly resolved Saturday, the number of active cases climbed to 89. That's a level not seen in the district since Dec. 24, after active cases reached a recent low of 48, on Jan. 6.

There were two individuals hospitalized with the virus Saturday, the health unit reported, with one in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Thunder Bay district has now seen a cumulative total of 719 cases. Of those, 606 were resolved, 89 were active, and 26 residents have died.
