THUNDER BAY – The COVID-19 pandemic claimed a 17th life in the Thunder Bay district over the Christmas holiday, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced Sunday.

The newest death involves another resident of the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home, where a major outbreak has accounted for 15 of the deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the district.

Active cases continued to fall, however, reaching 84 as of Sunday after sitting above 100 for most of December.

Reporting three days’ worth of data following a break on Christmas and Boxing Day, the health unit reported 10 new cases for the period of Dec. 25, 26, and 27 on Sunday.

All involved individuals in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas.

Six of those were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case, one was associated with travel outside of the region, another with the Roseview outbreak, while two had no known exposure.

Meanwhile, active COVID-19 infections stood at 22 residents and 8 staff members at Southbridge Roseview, an overall decline of three since the company last updated its numbers on Dec. 24.

There continued to be no individuals hospitalized with the virus as of Sunday.
