THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Hogarth Riverview Manor, after one staff member recently tested positive.

The outbreak impacts fifth floor areas Marigold-5 North and Orchid-5 South.

Provincial guidelines require an outbreak to be declared at long-term care facilities when a single resident or worker tests positive. The declaration ensure outbreak management measures are put in place swiftly, the health unit said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

“In collaboration with St. Joseph’s Care Group, TBDHU has initiated a thorough assessment of the situation, including enhanced surveillance and testing activities and on-site inspection,” the agency said. “Further measures will be taken as needed to manage this situation.”

Significant measures were already in place at the Lillie Street facility, the health unit said, including participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program by staff, residents, and essential caregivers.

As of Friday, approximately 95 per cent of residents at the home had been vaccinated, and nearly all of those had received a second dose, said St. Joseph's Care Group president Tracy Buckler.

All SJCG staff and physicians had been offered the vaccine as of last week, she added, with 71 per cent of staff at Hogarth Riverview Manor vaccinated with at least a first dose.

It’s the seventh outbreak declared at the home since May of 2020. Five have so far been resolved with only a single staff member testing positive.

A sixth outbreak was declared March 3, also involving only one positive staff member, though it has not yet been declared over.

The facility, operated by St. Joseph’s Care Group, has 544 beds, making it one of the largest LTC homes in the province.
