THUNDER BAY — A COVID-19 outbreak has now been declared at St. Martin Elementary School in Thunder Bay.

The district health unit made the announcement Wednesday evening.

It said five individuals associated with the West Mary Street school have tested positive for the virus.

The initial public health investigation shows that the virus spread among these people, and that some of the spread occurred in the school setting.

TBDHU said others who may have been exposed and are considered high-risk contacts have already been contacted by public health.

Impacted classes and cohorts have been dismissed.

TBDHU and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board are working together to manage the situation.

The school remains open at this time, but additional measures will be taken as needed.

A letter to the school community and the Schoolhouse Playcare Centre community, signed by Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille, said those families who have not been contacted by the health unit should assume their children are not considered to be at elevated risk at this time.
