THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s COVID-19 active case count continues to plummet.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced 29 new cases, but with 49 resolved, the region is down to 305 active cases, 20 fewer than on Monday.
It’s the fourth straight day the region’s case number has dropped below 40, after being above 40 for nine of the previous 10 days.
It’s the lowest total of active since Feb. 24, when there were 304 cases, and the sixth straight day the case count has fallen.
The city and district’s seven-day, per-100,000 population count has dropped to 157.4, which is the lowest it’s been since Feb. 23. Thunder Bay peaked at 277.4 on March 13.
Of the new cases, 10 are considered household contact and 10 are considered other close contact. Four of the cases are of unknown origin and the exposure category in the remaining five is pending.
The health unit is reporting four fewer district residents in hospital, the number dropping to 31. Seven of those are still in the intensive care unit. The hospital says it has a total of 35 COVID-19 patients admitted, with nine in ICU.
Twenty-seven of the new cases are in Thunder Bay and surrounding area, while two are considered to reside in district communities.
There have been 1,049 cases this month and 2,661 overall since the first one was announced in Thunder Bay last March 27. Of those, 2,316 are considered resolved. There have been 40 deaths, 10 in March alone.
