THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Matawa Education and Care Centre after at least six people tested positive.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit said it's believed the infection was likely acquired in the facility, the former city-owned Grandview Lodge.

The health unit says it continues to maintain a heightened level of vigilance to identify and support anyone who might have the virus, which will continue until the risk period is over.

Actions were already underway at the centre to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Anyone considered a close contact of someone diagnosed with COVID-19, along with their families, have been contacted by a public-health nurse. Anyone not contacted is not considered a close contact.
