THUNDER BAY — An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at a Thunder Bay nursing home.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit and the City of Thunder Bay announced an outbreak Sunday at the city-operated Pioneer Ridge long-term care home on Tungsten St.

It's in the Plaza 3 section of the facility.

The health unit said it has initiated a thorough assessment of the situation, and that further measures will be taken as needed to manage the outbreak.

According to the latest data published by TBDHU, there are currently eight active outbreaks of COVID-19 in high-risk settings in the district.

Last Thursday, the health unit announced three additional deaths that were linked to the virus, bringing to 103 the number of district residents who have passed away at least in part due to COVID-19.

Almost one-third of the fatalities have occurred since January 1 of this year.
