THUNDER BAY – An COVID-19 outbreak that spread rapidly through the area’s homeless and precariously housed community has been declared to be over.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Thursday said it took a collaborative and sustained effort by a number of community organizations, targeted vaccinations and enhanced prevention and control measures to get the outbreak under control.

Outbreaks were declared in January at both the Thunder Bay District Jail and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, which helped fuel the spread in the homeless community.

At the pandemic’s peak in mid-March, there were 470 cases of COVID-19 confirmed and active in the District Thunder Bay.

A health unit release suggests while the worst might be over, they’re not taking any chances moving forward.

“Many measures will be kept in place and ongoing vigilance maintained to identify and quickly manage any further cases in this population,” the release reads.

There are currently 67 active and confirmed COVID-19 cases in Thunder Bay.
