THUNDER BAY — The percentage of COVID-19 tests that show a positive result has declined in the Thunder Bay district.

The district health unit on Wednesday reported the positivity test rate fell to 10.1 per cent during the week of May 29 to June 4.

During the previous week, 14.0 per cent of tests were positive.

According to data posted on TBDHU's website, tests conducted on samples taken from the city's sewer system also show declining amounts of the virus in the last couple of weeks.

The health unit said 59 new COVID-19 infections were confirmed since Monday, bringing the current active case count to 152, an increase of 34.

Officials caution, however, that case counts are no longer considered accurate due to a lack of access to molecular testing in Ontario, and the actual number of active infections is likely several times higher.

Twenty-six district residents with COVID-19 are now in hospital, including two in intensive care.

COVID-related data issued by TBDHU is different from what's released by Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, as the health unit collects information on all district residents in all hospitals, whereas TBRHSC only releases information related to its own patient population.

In addition, while TBDHU publishes data on Monday, Wednesday and Friday,  the Thunder Bay hospital provides updates daily Monday to Friday.
